PHASA is affiliated, either through membership or otherwise, to national and international hunting and conservation organisations.

PHASA also serves on various provincial and other forums in the hunting industry to discuss and comment on issues relating to the hunting industry.

As a professional body, PHASA takes part in the SAQA Professional Body Forum.
PHASA serves on the Game Meat Industry Forum and together with CHASA and NHSA submitted proposals for consideration by the Forum.

PHASA serves on the Board of TBCSA (Tourism Business Council of SA) where tourism-based organisations and government meet at the highest level to discuss tourism-related issues. We were also involved with the development of the Tourism Recovery Strategy which was presented to the portfolio committee in June.

PHASA had a meeting with the Minister of Tourism, Mmamoloko Kubayi Ngubane, in May 2020 to discuss the way forward on the hunting issues during the COVID-19 pandemic. For the first time ever, the Tourism Department publicly endorsed and acknowledged the hunting sector’s contribution to the economy of South Africa. This meeting resulted in the resuming of meat-hunting within provincial borders.

Appointment in 2019 to the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) High Level Panel for the review of existing policies and practices related to the management and handling, breeding, hunting, and trading of Elephant, Lion, Leopard, and Rhinoceros.

Norms and Standards for the Hunting of Large Predators were developed and accepted at the PHASA AGM 2020. PHASA has representation on the Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries’ (DEFF) National African Lion Task Team.

PHASA presented views and supplied evidence to the UK Trophy Hunting Team regarding the import and export of hunting trophies.

PHASA has a close relationship with representatives of Airlink and was instrumental in getting FlySafair to transport firearms.

Exhibits at SCI and DSC Shows in the USA, as well as the Jagd and Hund Show in Germany and the China Hunting Show, promoting South Africa as the preferred hunting destination, and supporting its members. PHASA exhibits at HuntEx, the national hunting show.

PHASA communicated with SCI, DSC and Jagd und Hund management regarding deposits paid by members and received positive replies.

Provincial meetings are held regularly with at least one Exco member in attendance and address members’ concerns and challenges during these discussions.

Members were kept up to date with COVID-19 information that can also be used for clients. In August, PHASA had a meeting with FNB about members whose applications for COVID Relief Schemes were refused during the COVID-19 lock-down. After the meeting, the contact details of a dedicated staff member to assist them were made available.
PHASA adapted to the COVID-19 regulations and hosted successful AGMs.

PHASA engages with the media on a regular basis. Interviews were done with a Korean production crew, and BNN Vara for a youth travel programme to promote sustainable and responsible hunting. We took part in a live panel discussion with actuality TV programme, Prontuit on kykNET, and interviews were conducted with the SABC and Waterberg Stereo regarding the impact of lockdown on hunting activities. Several videos were made to address members and the public.

A weekly newsletter is emailed to members to keep them informed of legislation, comments to be submitted, vacancies for PH positions, etc. Members can also take part in lively discussions on the provincial WA groups.

Other PHASA services include:

  • assisting international hunters with temporary import permits for firearms
  • giving incentives to outfitters that use PHASA’s service;
  • assisting members with provincial permit/licence problems
  • issuing Professional Hunters Status for Section 16A of the FCA as well as endorsements for firearm licence applications.

PHASA also has a medal programme that members and non-members can benefit from. Members receive a 20% excl VAT payback on orders.
