A person has to attend a professional hunters' school, of which there are currently 11 registered in South Africa, in order to do the professional hunters' course.
Upon the successful completion of the course, the person then needs to apply for a Professional Hunters' Permit from the Nature Conservation Authorities in the province where he/she wants to operate as a professional hunter.
A Professional Hunter's Permit will only be issued to a person who complies with provincial legislation pertaining to professional hunting, which includes amongst others that the person:
- Is a South African Citizens; or
- Has Permanent Residency; or
- Has a work permit
